s most jaw dropping and take-your-breath-away shocking must-see film. And to do so she employed a whole lot of devices that often spell disaster on the screen: narration, journal entries, flashbacks, conflicting views of her main characters and a very large cast of supporting players. Yet everything works brilliantly in this complex and twisty mystery thriller that starts slowly, even a bit disjointedly, but ultimately lifts you off the edge of your seat.

Carrie Coon makes a tough and quirky yet very real and vulnerable big screen feature debut as Nick’s supportive but exasperated sister. Kim Dickens brings a fresh face to the dogged detective who refuses to rush to conclusions. Missi Pyle is spot-on as Ellen Abbott, a thinly veiled fictional version of Cable TV’s Nancy Grace. And Tyler Perry proves to be casting perfection as high profile defense attorney Tanner Bolt. Never loathsome or flashy, he is a warm, welcome and savvy ally for anyone with serious cash who nonetheless finds great amusement in his latest client’s difficulties.
Fans of director David Fincher will find this his most compelling work without any obtrusive tricks or flash. With material this good, there’s no need for anything else. And he still hits us with one of the most shocking single scenes in years. Simply put, “Gone Girl” will blow you away.
